The clinical trial nurse – an emerging discipline for RN’s
An interesting career path is emerging for registered nurses in clinical research. The clinical research nurse has become an integral element of the clinical trial process and is fast evolving as a new and challenging specialty. The role of RNs in Clinical Research
Research nurses are the eyes, ears and hands that conduct much of today's clinical research. Working with the principal investigator and research coordinators, staff research nurses participate in clinical trials that evaluate new drugs and medical devices. The role of clinical research nurses involves:
- coordination of clinical trials to assure trial compliance to study protocols
- provide education about trial to patients and families, and act as a liaison between the patient/family and the healthcare team
- recruit and screen potential study participants
- perform patient evaluations, administer medications and research instruments, and provide nursing support to perform specialized diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical procedures
By taking care of patients while simultaneously contributing to the scientific knowledge of clinical trials, research nurses help both the immediate patient and future patients around the world.
