Certified Respiratory Therapist Duties

A certified respiratory therapist will be required to assist other respiratory therapists and physicians in the performance of breathing procedures. They will also be asked to diagnose, treat and manage patients who have pulmonary disorders, lung cancer, or other breathing issues. A certified respiratory therapist can expect to collect samples of sputum, blood and breath on a daily basis. These samples are to be analyzed for levels of carbon dioxide, oxygen, or other gases. The certified respiratory therapist must have familiarity with standard practices within the field of respiratory therapy, and should have the ability to be creative and compassionate towards their patients. The certified respiratory therapist will assist in the decision-making process that determines whether or not a patient needs an impairment.

Certified Respiratory Therapist Education Requirements

An associate’s degree is required for an entry-level position as a certified respiratory therapist. The individual must have a degree in therapy, healthcare, or a related field. Aside from the necessary degree, a prospective certified respiratory therapist is required to have a Certified Respiratory Therapist credential, which licenses them to practice respiratory therapy. Some hospitals and facilities may even require the certified respiratory therapist to have a CPR certification, as there may be some situations in which a patient has stopped breathing. Because the certified respiratory therapist will be asked to perform a multitude of different tasks, a strong degree of critical thinking, communication and teamwork is also required.

Certified Respiratory Therapist Job Market

The average annual salary for a certified respiratory therapist salary can depend on the level of certification and degrees as well as the individual’s experience, state requirements, or the demands of the hiring facility. There is a projected growth in the respiratory therapy market, making it an ideal time to pursue a career in this field. With the Baby Boomer generation going into hospitals more frequently, there is an increasing demand for respiratory therapists.
