Vascular Technologist Duties

A vascular technologist, also known as a vascular echo technologist, plays a crucial role in the diagnostic process. These professionals use specific ultrasound technology to measure blood flow, veins, oxygen flow and heart rates. The daily duties of a vascular technologist include testing for heart disease, diagnosing heart conditions using echo technology, working with other professionals to determine the best course of treatment, working with advanced technology, measuring blood flow, monitoring the body for tumors and speaking with patients and health professionals about the testing process. A vascular technologist is required to have high critical thinking skills as well as the ability to stand on their feet for hours on end, as this position involves moving around and using hefty machinery.

Vascular Technologist Education Requirements

At the entry level, a vascular technologist is required to have an associate’s degree in vascular technology. Those who are already working in the healthcare field may instead choose to pursue a certification course to familiarize and certify them for the use of vascular echo technology. Although an associate’s degree is the only requirement by most hospitals, schools that offer vascular technology programs also offer a bachelor’s course that is easy to apply to. Aside from having a degree, a prospective vascular technologist is required to have necessary certification from the Registered Vascular Technologist credential exam. Aspiring professionals must be trained in the use of non-invasive ultrasound devices as well as hands-on experience working with patients before being hired for a job. This individual must also be extremely detail-oriented as well as compassionate towards patients who may have a lot of questions.
