La Rabida Children's Hospital
La Rabida has rich history dating back to the World’s Fair—modeled after a Spanish monastery, the hospital has a unique appearance, mixed with modern, updated architecture. La Rabida is an organization that capitalized on its natural environment to bring out the beauty in its facility; La Rabida sits on the shore of Lake Michigan in beautiful, public park land. The waterside location has lent itself well to the hospital’s whimsical, nautical theme. The recently-renovated outpatient center boasts a sweeping view of Lake Michigan in the waiting area, and floor to ceiling windows to allow for a great deal of sunlight and beautiful views. Colorful imagery of native Lake Michigan wildlife is peppered throughout the facility. The inpatient unit of La Rabida also carries the theme, and is playfully known as the, “SS La Rabida inpatient unit”. Children stay in “cabins” instead of rooms, and are referred to as “passengers”. Staff get in on the fun, and are known as, “the crew”. More importantly, since La Rabida is a hospital exclusively for children, the equipment and facilities are all child-friendly and designed specifically for kids.
