We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to join our educational team for the upcoming school year in Pittsfield, MA. As a TVI, you will play a vital role in supporting students with visual impairments, ensuring their educational needs are met and empowering them to succeed academically and socially.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with general education teachers and other specialists to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with visual impairments
- Provide direct instruction to students, utilizing appropriate teaching strategies and materials to address their unique needs
- Assess students' functional vision and provide recommendations for adaptations, accommodations, and assistive technology devices
- Teach skills related to orientation and mobility, including cane use, spatial awareness, and independent travel techniques
- Adapt and modify curriculum materials to make them accessible to students with visual impairments
- Collaborate with parents/guardians, providing regular updates on student progress and discussing strategies for support at home
- Stay up to date with best practices in the field of visual impairment education and attend professional development activities as required
Requirements:
- Master's Degree in Education with a specialization in Visual Impairments or a related field
- Valid state certification in Visual Impairments Education
- Experience working with students who are visually impaired is strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of braille, adaptive technology, and specialized instructional strategies for students with visual impairments
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with students, parents, and colleagues
- Ability to adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of students across grade levels (K-12)
- Passion for working with students with disabilities and promoting inclusive education
