Calling on dual-certified Teachers of Visually Impaired Students and Orientation and Mobility Specialists based in Alameda County, CA! Soliant is working with a collective of 4 districts in the area and is seeking a contract provider in the upcoming school year.
Details of the position below:
- Part- or full-time applicants welcome (time commitment is between 2 to 5 days a week)
- Travel between Districts may be requested--mileage reimbursement is provided
- Caseload will consist of a wide age range, from K-12
Applicants will be working with students with visual impairments, focusing on both academic instruction, and imparting practical skills with navigating their environments.
The applicant will:
- Evaluate pupils' need for and, if needed, recommending appropriate assistive technology and specialized reading materials
- Equip visually impaired students with the skills to travel independently, focusing on the following areas:
- Body imagery
- Laterality
- Environmental concepts
- Gross and fine motor skills
- Sensory awareness, stimulation and training
- Spatial concepts
- Sighted guide procedures
- Basic protective and information gathering techniques
- Orientation, map, and cane skills
- Use of residual vision
- Ways to travel in residential or public spaces
- Conduct functional vision assessments
- Report on students' Present Levels of Performance, Annual Goals and Short-Term Objectives for review at IEP (Individual Education Plan) Team Meetings.
- Compile information necessary for the purchase of recommended assistive technology and large type and Braille reading material, in addition to tools such as tactile maps to cater to O&M needs
- Document student progress toward achievement of annual goals.
- Collaborate with teachers, instructional assistants, other support personnel and parents.

Requirements:
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing
- Teacher of Visually Impaired certification
