Job Title: Paraprofessional
Job Summary:
The Paraprofessional provides support to teachers and students in a classroom setting, assisting with instructional activities and ensuring a positive and productive learning environment. This role is crucial in helping students achieve their educational goals and addressing individual needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist teachers in preparing and delivering instructional materials and activities.
- Support students with special needs, including those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, or behavioral challenges.
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students as directed by the teacher.
- Supervise students during classroom activities, lunch, recess, and other school-related functions.
- Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and assist with behavioral interventions.
- Monitor student progress and report observations to the teacher.
- Maintain a safe and organized classroom environment.
- Assist with administrative tasks, such as grading and record-keeping.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
- Participate in professional development opportunities as required.
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associates degree or higher, or completion of at least 60 college semester credits preferred.
- Previous experience working with children, particularly in an educational setting, is advantageous.
Certifications:
- Must meet the Minnesota Department of Education's requirements for paraprofessionals, which typically include passing a state-approved test or holding an associate's degree or higher. Details on state requirements can be found here.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting student learning and development.
- Ability to follow instructions and adapt to the needs of students.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills and familiarity with educational software.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move throughout the school day.
Additional Requirements:
- Background check and fingerprinting as required by Minnesota state law.
- Completion of any additional training or certification as required by the school district.
