O&M Specialist - Weaverville, North Carolina

A K-12 school in Weaverville, NC is seeking a skilled Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) on a contract basis for the current school year (CSY). This role focuses on supporting students with visual impairments by providing specialized orientation and mobility training to enhance their independence and safety within educational and community environments.

Responsibilities include:

• Conducting individual assessments to develop tailored orientation and mobility plans
• Teaching techniques to improve students’ spatial awareness and safe navigation skills
• Collaborating with teachers, families, and other professionals to integrate mobility goals with academic and functional objectives
• Maintaining accurate records and reporting student progress
• Staying current with best practices and advancements in orientation and mobility services

Desired qualifications and experience:

• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or equivalent)
• Experience working with children and adolescents with visual impairments in educational settings
• Strong knowledge of accessibility tools, techniques, and safety protocols
• Excellent communication skills to effectively work with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams
• Ability to adapt instruction to meet individual student needs
