ASL Interpreter | Atlantic City, New Jersey

This full-time, contract position as a 1:1 Sign Language Interpreter supports a K-12 student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing during the academic school year. Located in Atlantic City, NJ, the role requires facilitating communication between the student, peers, teachers, and staff by interpreting spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) or other communication methods specified in the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Responsibilities include:

• Providing real-time interpretation during classroom instruction, school activities, and other educational settings
• Assisting the student in understanding class content, assignments, and social interactions
• Collaborating with educators and special education staff to ensure accommodations and instructional strategies meet student needs
• Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in compliance with FERPA and IDEA guidelines
• Participating in IEP meetings and offering insights on communication and access
• Preparing in advance for classroom content to ensure effective interpretation
• Supporting the student’s independence and self-advocacy skills

Required qualifications:

• Fluency in ASL with a minimum EIPA score of 3.5; RID certification also accepted
• High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field preferred
• At least one year of experience working with school-aged children in educational settings preferred
• Strong familiarity with Deaf culture and educational needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to maintain professionalism, discretion, and flexibility within a dynamic school environment

The schedule aligns with regular school hours, Monday through Friday, following the academic calendar. Competitive compensation is offered based on experience and certifications.
