A full-time 1:1 Sign Language Interpreter position is available at an elementary school in Aurora, IL. This contract role is for the current school year (CSY) and involves supporting a student who is deaf with an additional visual impairment. The interpreter will work closely with the educational team to implement strategies that enhance the student’s visual access and facilitate communication.

The student is relatively new to American Sign Language (ASL), so the interpreter will provide essential language modeling to support language development. Collaborative teamwork and flexibility are key to ensuring the student’s needs are fully met within this specialized educational environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 sign language interpreting services for a student with deafness and visual impairment.
  • Collaborate with educators and support staff to develop and implement strategies that promote the student’s visual access.
  • Model ASL to support the student’s language acquisition and communication skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Participate in team meetings to enhance student support and educational outcomes.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language with experience interpreting in educational settings.
  • Familiarity with working with students who have both hearing and visual impairments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with educational teams.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience in a 1:1 interpreting role preferred.
