A part-time Sign Language Interpreter is needed to support a 3rd grade student in an elementary school setting in Moundville, AL. The student uses cochlear implants and primarily relies on verbal communication, but the family requests the use of American Sign Language (ASL) to enhance communication skills. This position is for the current school year (CSY), starting as soon as possible.
Location: Moundville, AL
Schedule:
- Teacher of the Deaf (TOD): 2 days per week (Monday and Thursday)
- Sign Language Interpreter (SLI): 3 days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday)
Duration: Full school year (CSY)
Employment Type: Part-time
Responsibilities:
- Provide sign language interpreting services to facilitate effective communication between the student, teachers, and peers.
- Support classroom instruction and social interactions to promote the student’s language development.
- Collaborate with the educational team, including the teacher of the deaf, to implement individualized strategies and support the student’s learning needs.
- Utilize ASL consistently as requested by the family to complement the student’s verbal communication.
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards throughout the assignment.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and experience interpreting in educational settings.
- Knowledge of working with students who have cochlear implants and diverse communication needs.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, students, and families.
- Previous experience in K-5 educational environments preferred.
