A contract position is available for an Educational Interpreter to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students across K-12 educational settings in Oswego, IL. This role involves facilitating effective communication between students, staff, and peers, ensuring full access to academic content and extracurricular activities, in compliance with Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and impartial interpreting or transliterating services in both academic and non-academic settings, including classrooms, extracurricular activities, and school events.
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL), Manually Coded English (MCE), or other communication methods as specified in each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Adapt signing techniques to support comprehension tailored to the student’s language needs and developmental level.
- Prepare thoroughly for assignments by reviewing relevant classroom materials, terminology, and lesson plans.
- Maintain strict confidentiality following FERPA guidelines and district policies.
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, support staff, and educational teams to address students’ communication access requirements.
- Encourage student independence and foster self-advocacy skills.
- Engage in professional development activities to maintain certification and enhance interpreting expertise.
Qualifications:
- Hold a valid Educational Interpreter License (ELS) as mandated by Illinois ISBE.
- Achieve a passing score on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or an equivalent assessment recognized by ISBE.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret in various communication modes tailored to student needs.
