A Special Education Teacher position is available at a public therapeutic day school serving students in grades 6 through 12 who experience emotional disabilities such as anxiety, depression, school avoidance/refusal, and trauma backgrounds. This role is designed for professionals skilled in supporting diverse learners from middle to high school within a structured, compassionate educational environment.

Location: Joliet, IL
School Type: K-12 Public Therapeutic Day School
Job Duration: Current School Year (CSY)
Schedule: Staff hours are 8:00 AM to 3:45 PM with a 30-minute duty-free lunch; student instructional hours are from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM
Caseload: Maximum of 8 students

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) tailored to the unique emotional and academic needs of students with disabilities
  • Employ evidence-based strategies to address emotional disabilities including anxiety, depression, and trauma
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including counselors and therapists to support student progress
  • Maintain thorough documentation and communicate effectively with parents, staff, and administration
  • Monitor student behavior and provide interventions to foster a safe and conducive learning environment

Qualifications & Desired Experience:

  • Valid Special Education teaching certification
  • Experience working with students who have emotional disabilities such as anxiety, depression, and trauma-related challenges
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, and therapeutic teaching approaches
  • Ability to manage a small caseload while individualizing instruction for each student
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills — able to work closely with colleagues and families
