A full-time Special Education teaching opportunity is available for the 2025-2026 school year in Sumter, SC. This contract position focuses on elementary education within a school setting, providing specialized instruction for students with developmental delays and mild intellectual disabilities. The role requires strong classroom management skills, particularly in behavior de-escalation, and involves close collaboration with support staff and general education teachers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver instruction to students in developmentally delayed and mildly mentally disabled (MIMD) programs, specifically grades 3rd through 5th
- Manage a classroom environment with a focus on behavior intervention and de-escalation strategies
- Collaborate regularly with general education K-5 teachers during Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) held twice weekly
- Participate in monthly meetings with special education program directors to align on educational plans and strategies
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) following established education plans
- Work alongside a paraprofessional assigned to the classroom to support student learning and behavior management
- Coordinate with other special education programs including Developmentally Delayed Kindergarten (DDK) and Moderate Intellectual Disability (MOD) classes
Qualifications and Experience:
- Active South Carolina Teaching Certification with a multi-category special education endorsement
- Experience teaching elementary students with developmental and intellectual disabilities
- Strong skills in behavior management and classroom de-escalation techniques
- Ability to collaborate with general education staff to support inclusive education initiatives
- Comfort working in an onsite capacity in a structured school environment
