Sign Language Interpreter (SLI)

Location: Berkeley, CA

Job Description: We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) to join our school in Berkeley, CA. The ideal candidate will provide high-quality interpreting services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring they have full access to educational opportunities and resources. This role involves working closely with teachers, staff, and students to facilitate effective communication in various educational settings.

Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation or a related field (preferred).
  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent (preferred).

Responsibilities:

  • Provide sign language interpreting services for students in classroom settings and other school-related activities.
  • Facilitate communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their peers, teachers, and staff.
  • Adapt interpreting style to match the communication needs of individual students.
  • Support students’ understanding and participation in classroom instruction and activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure effective inclusion of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to the development of students' individualized education plans.
  • Continuously improve interpreting skills through professional development and training opportunities.

Certifications:

  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent (preferred).
  • Valid California state certification or licensure for sign language interpreters (preferred).
