Job Title: School Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) - 1:1 with High School Student
Location: Gorman, NC
Job Type: Full-Time, School Year Position

Job Description:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) to provide one-on-one support for a high school student with a significant cognitive disability. The successful candidate will work closely with the student, teachers, and educational staff to ensure effective communication and support throughout the school day.

Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter (e.g., RID, EIPA, NIC, or equivalent).
  • Previous experience working with students with disabilities, particularly those with significant cognitive impairments, is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and ability to interpret effectively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with educators, support staff, and families.
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting students with diverse learning needs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or education in special education or related fields is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 sign language interpreting for a high school student with a significant cognitive disability.
  • Facilitate communication between the student and teachers, peers, and staff using American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Work alongside a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher to support the student’s academic and social participation in the classroom.
  • Collaborate with educational staff to adapt communication strategies that best support the student's individual needs.
  • Ensure the student can actively participate in lessons, discussions, and activities by providing accurate and clear interpretation.
  • Maintain professional confidentiality and respect the student’s privacy.
