Job Summary
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Special Education Teacher to develop and deliver instructional programs that meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. The ideal candidate will create individualized education plans (IEPs), collaborate with colleagues, and provide specialized support to ensure that students can achieve their academic and personal potential.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
- Provide tailored instruction in a variety of settings (self-contained, inclusion, or resource rooms) to meet the needs of students.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and support staff to create a collaborative learning environment.
- Assess student progress regularly and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of student progress and IEP documentation.
- Provide behavioral and emotional support using positive reinforcement and evidence-based strategies.
- Participate in IEP meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Engage in professional development opportunities to remain current on best practices and legal requirements.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
Licensure and Certifications (Required in Florida):
- Florida Teaching Certification in Exceptional Student Education (ESE).
- Endorsement in Special Education (Primary Grades or specific grade levels as required).
- Specialization/Certification Areas may include:
- Exceptional Student Education (ESE)
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Learning Disabilities (LD)
- Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD)
- Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) Certification:
- Completion of a state-approved teacher preparation program.
- Passing scores on the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) for special education (such as the FTCE Exceptional Student Education K-12).
- Background Check:
- Clear background check via the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
- Completion of all required child abuse and criminal history screenings.
Additional Skills:
- Knowledge of Florida’s educational standards and IEP development.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and apply various teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
- Proficiency in using educational technology and assistive devices.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with students with various disabilities (e.g., autism, intellectual disabilities, emotional disabilities).
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) or proficiency in sign language is a plus.
- Training in behavioral intervention strategies such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or Positive Behavior Support (PBS).
