Emergency Room Nurse Duties

As an emergency room nurse, you are expected to have critical quick thinking skills and a tough stomach. You will work in a critical care environment, assisting doctors and surgeons to help patients who are dealing with trauma and intense pain. In general, an emergency room nurse is expected to use medical equipment, perform minor operations, provide healthcare, monitor patient records, plan for long-term needs, speak with patients’ families about their illnesses or injuries and provide continued care for the duration of the patient’s hospital stay and beyond. Emergency room nurses deal with ailments that range from allergic reactions and broken toes to critical car accident injuries or disease symptoms. An emergency room nurse must know how to be prepared for the worst.

Emergency Room Nurse Education Requirements

Emergency room nurses are required to have the same education levels as a registered nurse, which includes a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing as well as having graduated from an accredited nursing program. On top of that, an emergency room nurse must have acquired the necessary licensure from the National Council Licensure Examination, as well as a state certificate for practice. Then, registered nurses can specialize in emergency room care through continued education or hands-on field experience. On top of the certificates required, an emergency room nurse must know how to be compassionate, quick-thinking, communicative and strong-willed.

Emergency Room Nurse Job Market

Emergency room nurses have a tough job, and one of the most critical positions in a hospital environment. Those who earn advanced diplomas or credits from an accredited school have the opportunity to earn even more. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nursing jobs are projected to rise almost 16% between now and the year 2024.
