Psychiatry Duties

A psychiatrist is responsible for analyzing and treating a patient’s mental health symptoms. The primary goal of the clinical psychiatrist is to determine whether or not a patient needs to be admitted to the hospital, undergo a series of tests, enter therapy, or handle prescriptions for certain psychotropic medications. Psychiatrists will be asked to diagnose, evaluate and ultimately treat patients that display a variety of mental and behavioral health disorders. Psychiatrists are licensed to prescribe medication or suggest therapy depending on the individual needs of the patient. They are required to hold regular sessions with their patients to analyze the effects of the prescribed medicine or to judge how other forms of treatment are impacting the patient’s mental health. Most psychiatrists work in private practices or in a hospital setting while reporting to a supervisor.

Psychiatry Education Requirements

Prospective psychiatry professionals must complete a four-year bachelor’s degree program in psychology or a related field. While psychiatry students do not need to major in pre-medicine, it is recommended to follow this career path as it can lead to a more successful hiring rate and higher living wages. After graduating from an undergraduate school, students must pass the Medical College Admission Test to be eligible for medical school. A four-year course load in medical school will grant the prospective psychiatrist an advanced degree in psychiatry. Then, the student must complete a medical residency, which can take up to four years to complete. After completing those requirements, the psychiatrist must pass the USMLE, which will grant them the license to practice medicine. All that’s needed after that is a board certification through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, which will land them a career in psychiatry.
