Ultrasound Technologist Duties

The primary duty of an ultrasound technologist is to use sound wave machines to create images of patient’s internal organs and other body parts. These images are used to create accurate diagnoses. Ultrasound technologists must be prepared to see a variety of patients from pregnant mothers and newborn babies to senior citizens with stomach problems, cancer patients and more. Ultrasound technologists will be asked to track a patient’s health issues and create diagnoses using ultrasound technology. You may also specialize in a variety of fields that include cardiac sonography, vascular technology, pediatric echocardiography, or even breast sonography. On a daily basis, you will prepare equipment for imaging, explain procedures to patients, and then perform the procedure while ensuring that the patient is comfortable. You play an essential role in helping to diagnose medical problems or other bodily complications.

Ultrasound Technologist Education Requirements

An ultrasound technologist is required to have an associate’s degree in medical technology or a related field. Those who wish to advance their careers can pursue higher education in the form of a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. There is also a number of professional certification options that prospective ultrasound technologists can pursue to give themselves an edge in the competition. It is advisable to earn a certificate from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, as well as the Cardiovascular Credentialing International organization. While these certificates are not required, they can help to advance the individual’s career and land them a higher pay grade.
