This individual will be responsible for implementing screening protocols as directed by the speech-language pathologist, will document patient progress, monitor patients through different electronic systems, and assess the needs of patients on a case-by-case basis. A speech-language pathologist is required to have at least a Bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology or some form of therapy, as well as whatever credentials are required by their state or location. The requirements for a speech-language pathologist may vary from state to state, although a degree is always a priority. Overall, the individual must possess compassion, patience, great critical thinking skills, great writing skills and a professional demeanor. Speech-language pathology assistants will be responsible for aiding the pathologist with any and all tasks, and so a speech-language pathology assistant will need to know how to be quick-thinking and be able to multi-task under a variety of different situations.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Job Market

The job outlook for speech-language pathology assistants is strong and getting stronger. As the general population ages, more patients will require speech therapy. At the same time, there’s greater awareness of speech and language disorders among children. Obtaining a Master’s degree can help the individual earn an even higher salary, although more training may be required. Overall, the job market is growing in the industry, making it a great time to get started as a speech-language pathology assistant.
