Medical Lab Technician Duties
The job of the medical lab technician is to work with others in a medical or clinical setting to use the proper lab equipment necessary to perform tests and procedures. Medical lab techs will be asked to match blood for transfusions, analyze cells, tissue, liquids, or other substances under a microscope, test cells for abnormalities or color differences, counting white blood cells, discovering the amount of drugs in a blood sample and using automated machines and robots to help perform multiple tests at a time. Medical lab technicians should have a great eye for detail, as well as the ability to be precise and physically fit. Great verbal and written comprehension is required as well as the ability to work well in a team environment.
Medical Lab Technician Education Requirements
A prospective medical lab technician must earn a bachelor’s or associate’s degree from an accredited tech school or community college. While the requirements for entry are not high, pursuing extra education can always play to your advantage. It will give you an edge over your competitors and help you stand out to your potential employers. There is optional certification that a prospective medical lab technician can seek to acquire as well. Lab technicians are not mandated to have national certification, but it never hurts to seek voluntary certification from professional organizations that offer national medical lab technician tests. Aside from having a required associate’s degree in a relevant scientific field, a medical lab technician must also prove that they have strong written communication, a creative mind, strong analysis skills and physical stamina.
Medical Lab Technician Job Market
The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that there is a projected job growth of 18% for medical laboratory technicians through the year 2024. This gives prospective lab techs an advantage in the medical job market, as the demand is growing.
