Provide specialized nursing care on a 20-bed medical-surgical/telemetry unit focused on patients with acute and chronic kidney disease, including those undergoing peritoneal dialysis and renal-related surgeries. This role requires strong clinical assessment skills to manage complex co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, CHF, and electrolyte imbalances, with emphasis on medical management of anemia, fluid overload, and renal complications.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver comprehensive nursing care including tracheostomy and chest tube management, IV and central line care, wound care, and postoperative monitoring.
- Perform cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation to closely observe patient status.
- Manage insulin and heparin drips, initiate PIV starts, and titrate drips based on heart rate.
- Coordinate care with an interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Facilitate discharge planning and provide patient education focused on renal and fluid management.
- Support documentation and adherence to admission/discharge protocols for efficient patient turnover.
- Collaborate closely with CNAs, charge nurses, respiratory therapists, hospitalists, and intensivists to maintain seamless care delivery.
Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with at least 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience.
- BLS and Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) certifications required; ACLS and Medical-Surgical or Nephrology Nursing certifications preferred.
- Proficiency in EPIC EMR system and equipment such as Philips monitors, glucommander, Nova Glucose Stat Strips, PCA pumps, and peritoneal dialysis machinery.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills with the ability to manage complex patient presentations.
- Comfortable working a 12-hour shift schedule (7 AM–7 PM or 7 PM–7 AM), including 5-6 weekends every 6 weeks and holiday coverage.
