Make a meaningful impact by supporting elementary students as an American Sign Language (ASL) instructor and Deaf/Hard of Hearing specialist. This contract role for the 2026-2027 school year centers just outside Charleston, Mississippi, and invites educators ready to promote accessibility, inclusion, and communication skills.
As a part-time opportunity (approximately 10 hours per week, with potential to increase as the ASL program grows), you’ll begin supporting one elementary student. As awareness and interest build within the school, your caseload may expand, providing opportunities for professional development and program growth.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Hold current certification/licensure as a Deaf/Hard of Hearing Specialist or relevant teaching credentials
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and prior experience teaching ASL to elementary-aged students
- Knowledgeable about Deaf culture, inclusion practices, and appropriate instructional strategies
- Ability to adapt lessons for various learning styles and needs
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with students, staff, and families
Core Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging ASL instruction to one elementary student at the start, adjusting lessons as the caseload increases
- Serve as a dedicated advocate and resource for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students within the school
- Develop lesson plans, assessments, and materials aligned with student goals and IEPs
- Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure classroom accessibility
- Foster a welcoming, supportive, and language-rich environment for all students
