Make a positive impact by supporting a growing elementary American Sign Language (ASL) program for the 2026-2027 school year. This contract opportunity is ideal for experienced educators passionate about Deaf/Hard of Hearing advocacy and committed to inclusive learning. You’ll play a crucial role in helping elementary-level students develop their ASL skills and confidence, beginning with a small caseload that may expand as the program grows.
Key Qualifications:
- Valid teaching certification in Deaf/Hard of Hearing or ASL instruction (state credentials preferred)
- Previous classroom experience teaching ASL to children, ideally at the elementary level
- Proficiency in American Sign Language, with a strong grasp of best practices for bilingual or language development methodologies
- Understanding of Deaf culture and the unique educational needs of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students
- Strong communication skills and a student-centered approach
- Adaptability to accommodate varied learning styles and evolving caseload
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide engaging, age-appropriate instruction in American Sign Language for one elementary student (with potential to serve more as the program enrolls additional students)
- Develop and implement individualized lesson plans to support language acquisition, comprehension, and fluency
- Collaborate with staff and families to create supportive, accessible learning environments
- Monitor student progress, assess skill development, and adjust instruction as needed
- Cultivate a respectful and inclusive classroom that values Deaf/Hard of Hearing identities
- Stay attuned to student needs, program expansion, and best practices in ASL education
