Step into a vital support role in education as an American Sign Language interpreter. This full-time contract position begins as soon as possible and continues through the end of the school year. Work one-on-one with a 9th grade student, ensuring she has equal access to her classes and a fully inclusive learning experience each day.

In this role, you'll be present during all class periods, translating spoken classroom content into ASL and facilitating communication between the student, classmates, and teachers. Your expertise will help break down barriers and empower a student to thrive socially and academically within her school environment.

Desired Skills & Certifications:

  • Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and adept at interpreting in educational settings
  • One or more of the following Maine certifications: Certified Interpreter, Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI), Conditional Interpreter, or Conditional Deaf Interpreter
  • Experience working in schools or with school-aged children is highly valued
  • Ability to quickly build rapport with students and maintain professionalism in classroom environments
  • Detail-oriented and able to accurately interpret a variety of academic subjects in real-time

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Accompany a 9th grade student to all scheduled classes
  • Interpret classroom instructions, discussions, and peer interactions as they happen
  • Facilitate communication between the student, staff, and peers to promote inclusion and understanding
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards for educational interpreters
