This role will involve assessing students’ unique navigation needs, developing personalized instructional plans, and providing hands-on mobility training both within school grounds and in the surrounding community. You'll collaborate with educators, support staff, and families to create a safe, inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive. Your expertise will empower students with visual impairments to build confidence and function safely and effectively in a variety of settings.
Qualifications:
- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
- Prior experience working with students with visual impairments, preferably in school or educational settings
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to tailor instructions to the needs of individual students
- Proficient in goal-setting, documentation, and progress monitoring
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams including teachers, therapists, and administrators
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate students’ orientation and mobility abilities and recommend appropriate interventions
- Develop, implement, and adjust individualized orientation and mobility instruction plans
- Provide direct training to students on safe travel techniques, use of mobility aids, and navigation strategies
- Educate staff and families on best practices for supporting students’ independence
- Maintain accurate documentation and regular progress reports
