Key Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
  • Experience working with students who are visually impaired or blind in educational environments
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working closely with students, families, and school personnel
  • Ability to conduct functional vision, orientation, and mobility assessments
  • Familiarity with individualized education plans (IEPs) and adherence to educational best practices
  • Compassionate, patient, and dedicated to making a positive impact

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assess students’ mobility needs and design tailored instruction plans to support safe, independent travel in school and community settings
  • Teach students orientation skills, cane techniques, route planning, and the use of assistive technology as appropriate
  • Collaborate with special education teams and participate in IEP meetings, providing expertise and progress reporting
  • Educate and consult with families and school staff to ensure environments are safe and accessible
  • Stay current with developments in the field and advocate for resources that benefit students’ orientation and mobility
