Apply NowIn this rewarding contract opportunity, you'll provide critical support as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) for students across Pre-K to high school throughout the district. Spanning the 2026-2027 school year from August 17, 2026, to June 9, 2027, this part-time, onsite role offers 2-3 days of in-person work per month (approximately 20-25 hours weekly), giving you the chance to make a lasting difference in the lives of visually impaired students.
You’ll play a vital role in empowering students with visual impairments to move safely and independently within school and local community environments. Both direct and consultative services are part of the responsibilities, promoting daily living skills, pre-cane and cane technique mastery, and comprehensive travel route education.
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or related field
- National certification through ACVREP (COMS or equivalent)
- Active K-12 teaching certification
- Previous success teaching or providing training to visually impaired clients (children and youth preferred)
- Skilled in assessment, instructional planning, and individualized safety strategies
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct and consultative orientation and mobility (O&M) services to students Pre-K through 12th grade district wide
- Assess students’ functional mobility and develop customized plans fostering independence
- Deliver hands-on and classroom instruction on safe, efficient, and confident travel
- Coach and support educational staff in best practices for working with students with low vision or blindness
- Facilitate professional development workshops and family consultations as needed
