Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
  • Experience working in school settings or with children/adolescents preferred
  • Thorough understanding of techniques and devices that support independent travel for individuals with visual impairments
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, families, and educators
  • Flexibility and adaptability in providing services across various school environments

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine students’ orientation and mobility needs
  • Develop and implement individualized instructional plans and mobility goals
  • Teach students safe, efficient travel skills—including cane techniques, environmental awareness, and navigation strategies
  • Train staff and family members on appropriate support and safety protocols
  • Monitor student progress and adjust strategies as necessary
  • Document all services provided and maintain detailed records per school and legal requirements
  • Participate in IEP meetings and contribute expertise to help drive student growth and independence
