Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M) - Carlsbad, NM

Qualifications & Experience:

• Must be a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
• Hold a current certification through the New Mexico Public Education Department (NM PED) as a Mobility Trainer for the Blind
• Proven experience in providing orientation and mobility instruction, preferably in a school setting
• Ability to design and implement individualized O&M plans based on each student’s abilities and needs
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and educational staff
• Self-motivated and able to work independently

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess students’ mobility and orientation needs using standardized evaluation tools
• Develop, implement, and monitor individualized instruction plans, setting measurable goals
• Teach students safe and effective travel techniques in classrooms, schools, and the community
• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and multidisciplinary teams to support students' educational progress
• Document services provided and progress made, maintaining accurate records in compliance with school policies
• Advise staff regarding environmental modifications or accommodations to enhance student safety and independence
