- Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
- Knowledge of current orientation and mobility instructional techniques and best practices
- Experience working with children and young adults who are blind or visually impaired
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with educators, families, and the wider school community
- Ability to adapt strategies to meet individual student needs
- Flexibility to work in both individual and group settings
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess students’ abilities and design personalized orientation and mobility programs
- Instruct students in the use of mobility aids, techniques for safe travel, and spatial concepts
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, therapists, and families to integrate O&M instruction into educational plans
- Advocate for student needs and ensure the accessibility of campus facilities and programs
- Maintain accurate documentation of progress and attend IEP/504 meetings as needed
- Provide professional guidance and training to school staff on best practices in orientation and mobility
