This contract opportunity for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist offers the chance to apply specialized expertise in supporting school-aged students with visual impairments.

Key Qualifications:

  • Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) by a recognized credentialing body
  • Experience developing and implementing orientation and mobility training programs for children and adolescents
  • Strong understanding of instructional methods, adaptive equipment, and accessible travel techniques
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with teachers, families, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to travel between school sites as needed within the assigned area

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assess students’ orientation and mobility needs using both formal and informal evaluations
  • Design individualized instruction plans based on evaluation data and IEP goals
  • Provide direct instruction in orientation concepts, cane travel techniques, use of low vision devices, and public transportation navigation
  • Collaborate with teachers, related service staff, and families to create accessible environments and promote student independence
  • Prepare progress notes, participate in IEP meetings, and monitor/document student outcomes
  • Assist with staff development and educate school personnel about best practices in mobility for students with visual impairments
