Play a vital role in supporting students’ independence and mobility as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in a vibrant Maryland community. This contract, full-time opportunity requires your expertise onsite, working directly with students in educational settings. Your knowledge and commitment will empower students with visual impairments to navigate their environments confidently, fostering both skill development and self-assurance.

Key Qualifications:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) or relevant credentials required
  • Experience working with school-aged children, particularly those with visual impairments
  • Strong communication skills for collaboration with teachers, families, and support staff
  • Up-to-date understanding of best practices and adaptive techniques in orientation and mobility instruction
  • Ability to design and implement customized instructional plans
  • Flexibility and adaptability within various school environments

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assess students’ mobility and orientation abilities to determine individual instruction needs
  • Create and deliver tailored O&M lessons, both indoors and outdoors
  • Teach students how to safely use canes and other adaptive tools
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to integrate O&M strategies into academic and social routines
  • Monitor and document students’ progress, making adjustments as necessary for continued growth
  • Educate faculty and support staff in strategies to enhance successful student navigation
