Qualifications and Desired Background:
- Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
- Experience working in school settings with students who have visual impairments
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities for collaboration with educators, families, and students
- Familiarity with individualized education plans (IEPs) and documenting student progress
- Flexibility and adaptability to meet diverse student needs
- Ability to travel between sites as required
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough assessments and develop orientation and mobility training programs tailored to each student's needs and goals
- Deliver direct instruction in orientation and mobility techniques, including cane skills, street crossings, public transportation, and environmental navigation
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate mobility strategies into students’ educational plans
- Educate school personnel and families on orientation and mobility techniques to support student success beyond instructional sessions
- Maintain accurate records to track progress and prepare reports for IEP meetings
- Participate in professional development and maintain current knowledge of best practices in the field
