Orientation and Mobility Specialist (O&M) - Independence, MO

Step into a rewarding contract opportunity as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) serving students across elementary, middle, and high schools in the Independence, MO area from August 24th through May 28th. You’ll play a vital role in supporting students with visual impairments, helping them build the confidence and skills necessary to navigate their environments and pursue independence. This full-time, onsite role offers flexibility—if you require a non-traditional schedule, alternatives may be considered.

Key Qualifications:

• Valid national-level certification (ACVREP/COMS) as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist
• Experience working with K-12 students who are blind or visually impaired
• Proven ability to teach essential life skills including travel safety, Braille, use of assistive devices (canes, guide dogs), and money management
• Strong communication skills to collaborate with students, families, and school personnel
• Comfortable traveling between multiple school sites within the district

Primary Responsibilities:

• Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility evaluations
• Deliver individualized instruction to help students achieve educational and personal independence
• Provide training on navigating public spaces, using assistive technology, and developing daily living skills
• Work closely with school teams and families to create student-centered support plans
• Serve as a resource within the district, advocating for accessibility and inclusion
