Qualifications & Desired Experience:

  • Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
  • Experience working with students who are visually impaired, ideally in an educational setting
  • Strong knowledge of orientation and mobility techniques and assistive technologies
  • Ability to develop Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a passion for helping students achieve greater independence

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine students’ orientation and mobility needs
  • Develop and implement personalized instruction plans for safe movement in various environments
  • Teach cane skills, spatial awareness, and strategies for public transport and street crossings
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to integrate mobility goals across academic and community settings
  • Regularly evaluate student progress and adjust instruction as needed
  • Advocate for necessary accommodations and serve as a resource on mobility-related matters within the school community
