Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) | Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania

Make a real difference for visually impaired students by serving as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist on contract for the remainder of the 25/26 school year. This engaging school-based role focuses on supporting students’ independence, safety, and navigation skills in both educational settings and the wider community.

Your expertise will be used daily to shape individualized education and empower students to move confidently. You’ll collaborate closely with school staff, families, and outside professionals to ensure each child’s needs are met and tracked for progress.

Key Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility
• Current certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
• Valid state driver’s license with readiness to travel as needed
• Strong assessment, planning, and communication skills

Main Responsibilities:

• Participate in the referral, assessment, and evaluation process for students with visual impairments
• Conduct thorough assessments of students’ orientation and mobility needs (including concept development, safe travel, sensory skills, and self-advocacy)
• Develop and implement targeted IEP/IFSP goals and instructional plans
• Recommend and help adapt programming or services based on student needs
• Provide direct instruction to students and consult with teachers, staff, and families
• Order, distribute, and maintain canes and low-vision travel devices
• Monitor and document student progress using ongoing assessments
• Lead in-service trainings for staff and family members
• Maintain documentation and ensure compliance with all reporting requirements
• Collaborate on safe and accessible school environments
