Make a meaningful impact this school year as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist supporting students with visual impairments. You’ll work under a contract arrangement through the end of the 25/26 school year, playing a crucial role in fostering independence and safe navigation skills in a school environment near Jersey Shore, PA.
Key Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility
- Active COMS certification issued by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
- Valid state driver’s license, with the ability to travel on short notice
- Strong background working with visually impaired students in educational settings
Core Responsibilities:
- Participate in referral and assessment processes for students with visual impairments
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations in areas such as orientation, environmental awareness, effective travel techniques, the use of low vision devices, and personal safety
- Set tailored IEP/IFSP goals and adapt programs as necessary to meet student needs
- Develop, implement, and monitor instructional plans to enhance students’ orientation and mobility skills
- Provide direct instruction and hands-on training for students, collaborating with school staff and families as needed
- Oversee the ordering and maintenance of canes and low-vision travel devices
- Maintain detailed documentation of instructional services and progress assessments
- Lead or contribute to in-service trainings for educators, staff, and community members
- Advise on physical environment design and modifications for student safety and efficiency
