Make a meaningful difference in students' lives as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist in an engaging and supportive educational setting near Kansas City, MO. This full-time contract opportunity extends from late August through the end of May, providing a chance to work onsite with students across elementary, middle, and high schools. You’ll play a pivotal role in helping students with low vision or blindness develop essential life skills for navigating their daily environments with independence and confidence.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments for students of various ages
  • Provide individualized instruction on travel techniques, use of canes or guide dogs, and urban navigation
  • Teach practical skills such as reading Braille, counting money, shopping independently, and other daily living activities
  • Collaborate closely with the school team and families to ensure coordinated support for each learner
  • Document progress and adapt approaches based on each student's evolving needs
  • Travel throughout the district to deliver services at multiple school sites

Qualifications:

  • National-level certification as a COMS through ACVREP (required)
  • Current or previous experience serving children or youth with visual impairments highly valued
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective teamwork and family collaboration
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel between district schools
