Desired Skills and Experience:

• Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or equivalent)
• Proven experience working with school-aged children who are blind or visually impaired
• Strong understanding of orientation and mobility techniques, adaptive technology, and individualized instruction
• Ability to develop and implement customized assessment and instructional plans
• Excellent communication skills for collaborating with teachers, families, and multidisciplinary teams
• Enthusiastic, patient, and creative approach to promoting student independence

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess students’ orientation and mobility needs through observations and formal evaluations
• Develop individualized instruction programs based on student goals and IEP objectives
• Teach travel skills, including cane techniques, route planning, environmental awareness, and the use of assistive technology
• Guide and support classroom staff and families to reinforce skills across settings
• Maintain accurate progress records and participate in IEP meetings
• Stay current with best practices in orientation and mobility
