Qualifications and Experience:

  • Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
  • Valid New Mexico Public Education Department (NM PED) certification as a Mobility Trainer for the Blind
  • Proven experience working with visually impaired students in school environments
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to support each student’s unique needs
  • Ability to design and implement individualized mobility and orientation plans
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct functional mobility assessments and create tailored orientation and mobility plans
  • Provide direct instruction to students on safe and effective mobility techniques in classroom, school, and community settings
  • Collaborate with teachers, family members, and other educational support staff to integrate mobility goals into each student’s education plan
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student progress, assessment outcomes, and service delivery
  • Promote awareness and understanding of orientation and mobility services within the school community
  • Stay current with best practices and advancements in orientation and mobility training
