This full-time, onsite contract opportunity invites experienced professionals to provide essential skills training to children and young adults with visual impairments. You’ll collaborate with educational staff and families to design and deliver personalized instruction in a school-based environment, serving communities near Laurel, MD.
Key Qualifications & Experience:
- Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) or eligibility to obtain certification
- Previous experience working with children and/or young adults in educational settings
- Solid understanding of O&M assessment tools, instructional techniques, and assistive technology
- Exceptional communication skills to consult with staff, families, and multidisciplinary teams
- Organized, flexible, and creative in adapting lessons to individual goals and abilities
- Background clearance as required by school regulations
Core Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments to identify students’ orientation and mobility needs and abilities
- Develop, implement, and adjust individualized O&M plans in collaboration with IEP teams
- Provide direct instruction in safe travel techniques, including cane use, orientation strategies, and environmental navigation
- Train students in public transportation use and community access skills
- Maintain accurate progress records and participate in IEP meetings
- Consult with classroom teachers, staff, and families to maximize students’ access to educational opportunities and independence
- Stay up to date with the latest O&M practices and assistive technology
