Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility required
- Current certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) with ACVREP
- Expertise in conducting comprehensive evaluations of orientation and mobility needs for visually impaired students
- Ability to develop and implement effective instructional plans based on individual assessments
- Strong consultative skills for collaborating with educators, staff, families, and the community
- Valid driver's license and readiness to travel between school sites as needed
Essential Responsibilities:
- Participate in the referral and assessment process for students with visual impairments
- Conduct evaluations covering concept development, environmental orientation, effective travel techniques, sensory development, personal safety, and the use of specialized devices
- Develop and carry out individualized instruction plans and set appropriate IEP/IFSP goals
- Order, maintain, and distribute canes and low-vision travel aids
- Provide direct instructional services and continuous progress monitoring
- Offer consultation and in-service training for staff and families
- Maintain accurate program documentation and reports on student progress
- Advise on creating and maintaining safe, accessible environments within the school
- Prepare detailed lesson plans and perform ongoing evaluations of student needs
