Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility required
- Current certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) through ACVREP
- Valid state driver’s license and ability to travel as needed
- Prior experience working with visually impaired students in a school or clinical setting preferred
- Strong collaborative, organizational, and communication skills
Essential Responsibilities:
- Participate in student referral and assessment processes
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations of students’ orientation and mobility needs, focusing on concept development, environmental orientation, safe travel techniques, and use of assistive devices
- Develop individualized O&M goals for IEP/IFSP plans and design instructional strategies to meet those objectives
- Provide direct instruction to students and offer consultative support to staff, families, and community members
- Maintain and manage mobility-related devices such as canes and low-vision aids
- Monitor student progress with criterion-based assessments, ensuring clear documentation and reporting
- Deliver informative in-service programs to educators and families
- Collaborate on safe environment design and participate in ongoing program enhancement
- Complete all necessary paperwork and service documentation accurately and timely
