Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) | Lewisburg, Pennsylvania

An exciting contract opportunity is available for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to support students with visual impairments for the remainder of the 25/26 school year. Located in a welcoming community near Lewisburg, PA, this role makes a meaningful difference in the lives of students through specialized assessment, instruction, and collaborative consultation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility
• Current Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential from ACVREP
• Valid state driver’s license and flexibility to drive as needed
• Experience working with school-age children with visual impairments preferred
• Solid communication and documentation skills

Key Responsibilities:

• Participate actively in referral and assessment processes for students with visual impairments
• Conduct comprehensive evaluations to identify orientation and mobility needs, including sensory development, safe travel techniques, and use of low-vision devices
• Develop and implement individualized instructional plans and IEP/IFSP goals tailored to each student's requirements
• Provide direct instruction in orientation and mobility, as well as consultation to staff, families, and the broader school community
• Recommend specialized modifications or services, ensuring students’ safe and independent navigation in school and community settings
• Maintain, order, and distribute necessary travel aids such as canes and low-vision devices
• Regularly monitor and document student progress through ongoing assessment
• Collaborate with educators and administration to create safe, accessible environments for all learners
• Offer in-service training programs to inform staff and families about O&M strategies and best practices
• Ensure all service delivery, lesson planning, and progress monitoring are meticulously documented
