You’ll work closely with a student in a safe, familiar environment, ensuring progress towards meaningful orientation and mobility goals. Each week, you’ll deliver two tailored sessions, each lasting 40 minutes, designed to foster independence and spatial understanding. There is flexibility with scheduling, making this an ideal role to complement your existing commitments.
Key Qualifications and Experience:
- Current endorsement as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist required
- Previous experience working within school settings or with students facing complex needs preferred
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with families and educational teams
- Genuine commitment to supporting functional independence for students
- Dedication to ongoing professional growth and person-centered practice
Role Responsibilities:
- Deliver individualized O&M instruction within a home setting, focused on spatial/positional concept development
- Guide the student to locate environmental features (doorways, furniture) using terms like left/right, near/far, next to, in/out
- Document progress toward the goal of locating 4 out of 5 targets over 3 consecutive sessions, using PA and ECC standards
- Consult with family and school personnel to ensure continuity of strategies and student safety
- Adapt methods and support as needed to match the student’s capabilities and learning style
