Empower students with visual impairments to navigate their world confidently in this rewarding contract position as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. This role offers the chance to make a real difference, working closely with students and school staff near Modesto, CA. You’ll design individualized training and instruction, fostering independence and safety for your students in both school and community settings.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Valid Orientation and Mobility Specialist certification (ACVREP certification or equivalent preferred)
- Experience providing O&M instruction in educational settings
- Ability to develop and implement individualized goals and lesson plans
- Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with students, families, and staff
- Knowledge of current best practices, assistive technology, and mobility tools for individuals with visual impairments
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess students’ orientation and mobility needs using formal and informal tools
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized instructional plans
- Teach safe and effective travel skills in school, home, and community environments
- Collaborate with educators, families, and other specialists to support student growth
- Document student progress and prepare reports that guide continued instructional strategies
- Participate in IEP meetings, providing expertise related to orientation and mobility
- Offer training and consultation to school staff regarding mobility techniques and safety protocols
