A contract opportunity is open for an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to provide crucial services to students with visual impairments for the remainder of the 25/26 school year. This role offers the chance to make a meaningful impact by empowering students to navigate their environments safely and independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Participate in the referral process and comprehensive assessment of visually impaired students
- Conduct detailed evaluations covering concept development, safe travel techniques, sensory development, self-advocacy, and use of visual devices
- Develop and implement individualized IEP/IFSP goals tailored to orientation and mobility needs
- Recommend modifications and specialized services as needed based on each student’s visual impairment
- Deliver direct orientation and mobility instructional services and consult with faculty, peers, and community resources
- Order, distribute, and maintain canes and low-vision devices essential for student travel
- Monitor student progress using ongoing, criterion-based assessment and report regularly
- Collaborate with staff, other professionals, and parents regarding program development, student needs, and progress updates
- Conduct in-service training sessions for staff, families, or community members
- Prepare daily lesson plans, establish instructional objectives, and maintain progress monitoring records
- Advise school officials on creating safe and efficient educational environments
- Maintain organized paperwork and documentation for all assigned students
- Retain a valid driver’s license with flexibility to travel on short notice
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility
- Current COMS certification (Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist) from ACVREP
- Experience working with school-aged children in school settings preferred
