Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) | Oakdale, California

Qualifications and Experience:

• Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or equivalent credentials required
• Experience working with school-aged students with vision impairments preferred
• Strong knowledge of assessment tools, adaptive devices, and mobility techniques
• Ability to develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility goals
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working across multidisciplinary teams
• Flexibility, empathy, and a commitment to fostering student success

Responsibilities:

• Conduct orientation and mobility assessments for students in various educational settings
• Design and implement individualized plans to help students improve independence
• Teach cane skills, safe travel techniques, and the use of adaptive mobility equipment
• Instruct on navigation strategies for school, home, and community environments
• Collaborate with teachers and families to seamlessly integrate mobility training into daily routines
• Monitor progress, update goals, and maintain accurate documentation
• Offer guidance and training to staff and caregivers as needed
