Qualifications & Preferred Background:

  • Valid certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS)
  • Experience working in schools or similar educational settings preferred
  • In-depth understanding of mobility aids, adaptive technology, and instructional techniques
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to develop and implement individualized plans based on student needs
  • Current or willing to obtain relevant licensure per state requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct orientation and mobility instruction to students with visual impairments
  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and monitor progress
  • Conduct assessments to determine student needs and document findings
  • Collaborate with IEP teams, teachers, staff, and families to support student goals
  • Teach environmental awareness, navigation skills, and use of related technology and tools
  • Maintain timely reports and participate in required meetings
  • Educate school staff on best practices for supporting students’ mobility needs
