Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) | Rowe, New Mexico

Qualifications & Desired Experience:

• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) from an accredited program
• Prior experience working with school-aged children preferred
• Ability to perform thorough assessment and develop tailored instructional plans
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities for engaging families, teachers, and support staff
• Flexibility and creativity in providing both group and one-on-one instruction
• Commitment to maintaining high ethical and professional standards

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess functional mobility needs of students with visual impairments
• Develop and implement individualized orientation and mobility training programs
• Teach students safe and effective travel techniques, including cane skills and environmental navigation
• Consult with IEP teams, participate in meetings, and document services provided
• Collaborate with teachers and parents to support learning in academic and community settings
• Offer recommendations for adaptive equipment and environmental modifications as needed
