Make a meaningful impact as an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist, supporting visually impaired students from 2nd grade through high school in a dynamic educational environment. This contract opportunity near Savannah, GA provides the chance to collaborate with multiple schools, offering tailored instruction and support to students as they develop essential orientation and mobility skills. You’ll have the autonomy to design your own schedule, maximizing both your effectiveness and the specific needs outlined in each student’s IEP.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Certification as a COMS (Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist) through ACVREP.
- Valid GaPSC (Georgia Professional Standards Commission) Teaching Certificate.
- Previous experience working with school-aged children across a range of grade levels, ideally with VI (Visually Impaired) populations.
- Strong ability to manage a flexible, self-created schedule across multiple school sites.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities, especially working with educators, administrators, and families.
- Commitment to following and contributing to individualized education plans (IEPs).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct orientation and mobility instruction to students from elementary to high school, traveling between various district schools.
- Assess student needs and develop targeted instructional plans in alignment with IEP goals.
- Participate actively in IEP team meetings, providing recommendations and updates on student progress.
- Maintain detailed documentation and progress reports in compliance with district and state requirements.
- Serve as a resource for school staff on issues related to VI and mobility strategies.
This onsite role runs from late July 2026 through May 2027 and offers 37.5 hours per week in a supportive school environment. You’ll have latitude to build productive relationships and truly make a difference for visually impaired students.
